Much like a wedding ring in Western cultures, a necklace of fine workmanship and precious materials is a traditional gift of a Singhalese groom to his bride. The original gold necklace on which the Museum’s earrings are based dates from 18th-century Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka), when the island was under Dutch rule. The original incorporates meticulously applied granulation, a technique in which tiny grains of gold are fused to an underlying surface metal. Produced in cooperation with The Cleveland Museum of Art.

Sterling silver and 24K gold plate, with cultured freshwater pearls. Length 1 in. Pierced.
