Sale - Greek Filigree Bead Earrings
Greek Filigree Bead Earrings

In Greek culture, jewelry decoration could bear religious, amuletic, or familial significance. Gold filigree blossomed in the ancient Greek cities of the North Pontic region and Asia Minor. The jeweler built up patterns from the surface in gold wire, joined with matching solder, to achieve exquisite detail. The technique is thought to have emerged in Egypt as early as the 12th dynasty (1965–1920 B.C.), but was not common until the 3rd to the 6th centuries B.C., when the Greeks evolved it into an art. Our earrings are based on a spiral filigree bead necklace made ca. 350 B.C. in the ancient city of Pantikapaion on the Black Sea in what is now Crimea. Produced in cooperation with the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg.

24K gold-plated sterling silver. Length 13/16 in. Pierced.
