The Arts of Japan: An International Symposium
The Arts of Japan: An International Symposium
Edited by Miyeko Murase and Judith G. Smith, 2000

This volume was published on the occasion of the international symposium "The Arts of Japan" held on April 29–30, 2000 in conjunction with the exhibition "Masterpieces of Japanese Art from the Mary Griggs Burke Collection" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 28–June 25, 2000. In keeping with the nature of the Burke Collection, the symposium was internationally broad in scope, covering the period from the twelfth to the nineteenth century. Topics discussed include Buddhist art, painting, ceramics for the tea ceremony, porcelains produced for export, and lacquerware. The contributors, who are among the most respected scholars in their fields, present new insights on many well-known masterpieces as well as less frequently discussed works, basing their research on close examination of the objects and placing them in their cultural, economic, and political contexts.

264 pages, 249 black-and-white illustrations, 8 1/2 in. x 10 1/2 in. Paper.
