Clearance - Green-Robed Father Christmas Standing Figure
Green-Robed Father Christmas Standing Figure

The character of Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, is derived from stories of St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra in the fourth century A.D. Known for his generosity, St. Nicholas has long been honored as the patron saint of sailors and of children (to whom he gives presents every December 6th) in Catholic Europe. Brought to New York City in the seventeenth century by Dutch colonists (who called him Sinterklaas), the legendary figure was adopted in America with the name Santa Claus. Our Green-Robed Father Christmas Standing Figure is adapted from the illustration on a Christmas card (probably American, late 19th–early 20th century) in the Museum's Burdick Collection.

Cast resin, hand painted. Height 8 3/4 in., width 5 3/8 in.
