A comprehensive record of the great achievements in western history, this series features six chronological programs on two DVDs for all audiences to enjoy. Explore the medieval world through examinations of the Crusades, Arthurian Legends, and the arts, including discussions on illuminated manuscripts like The Book of Hours and written masterpieces by Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Chaucer. Learn about the Renaissance through the oeuvres of Da Vinci and Shakespeare, and discover other famous works such as The Book of Martyrs and Milton’s Paradise Lost. Enter the world of Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, and Vivaldi during the Baroque period, and discover metaphysical poetry and the works of Donne. The program featuring “The Age of Reason” includes discussions of paintings by Tiepolo, Gainsborough, Reynolds, David, Copley, and the music of Mozart, and viewers will enjoy an overview of the period’s poetry and the cultural impact of the American Revolution. The works of Gericault, Delacroix, Goya, Constable, Turner, and Friedrich come alive in the program titled “The Age of Revolution,” which also features the music of Beethoven and Chopin, as well as a review of Romantic poetry. The final program explores Impressionist art, featuring the paintings of Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Seurat, and Van Gogh among others, along with examinations of the music of Brahms, the literature of Charlotte Brontë, and the cultural effects of the Suffragette movement.
