A unique characteristic of photography has always been its ability to record the visible and material world with both truth and accuracy. From the 1860s onward, photography has also been enlisted to provide proof of the immaterial: auras and apparitions; séances and levitations; transfigurations and the spirits of the deceased. The Perfect Medium: Photography and the Occult examines the rich and complex history of photography and the occult, identifying instances when the two have come together, intersected, or overlapped. Most of the photographs included date between 1870 and 1930, the period when the interaction between photography and the occult was at its most prolific, and were culled from numerous public and private collections and archives throughout Europe and North America.
