Clearance - Théodore Chassériau (1819–1856): The Unknown Romantic
Théodore Chassériau (1819–1856): The Unknown Romantic

By Stéphane Guégan, Vincent Pomarède, and Louis-Antoine Prat, with contributions by Bruno Chenique, Christine Peltre, Peter Benson Miller, and Gary Tinterow. Produced in conjunction with the exhibition "Théodore Chassériau (1819–1856): The Unknown Romantic" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October 22, 2002–January 5, 2003.

Although recognized as a master of Romantic painting, an early death and the destruction of his most famous work in a fire in the Commune in 1871 rendered Théodore Chassériau little known in France and virtually unknown elsewhere. Possessing the graphic line and nobility of Ingres and the blazing color and mordancy of Delacroix, Chassériau made his debut at the Salon of 1836 with several portraits and religious subjects. From there his style grew, often demonstrating different trends, tensions, and contradictions that were taking place in the Paris art world. He regularly painted literary subjects and Shakespearean themes, however, a trip to Algeria in 1846 inspired a wealth of Orientalist images. This publication aims to provide and provoke new research on this eclectic, restless artist with regard to his life and work, and on French Romanticism in general.

432 pages, 326 illustrations (267 in color), 9 1/4 in. x 12 3/8 in. Hardcover (cloth, with jacket).
