Abalone Mosaic Earrings

A master of many media, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was one of America’s most noted decorative artists at the turn of the century. Son of the founder of the silver and jewelry firm Tiffany and Company of New York, Louis Tiffany began his career as a painter but moved quickly to interior decoration and leaded-glass windows, creating innovative types of opalescent glass that radiated deep, vibrant hues. Using variations in color and thickness of glass, he achieved pictorial effects of unsurpassed subtlety and beauty. In addition to stained-glass windows and lighting fixtures, Tiffany’s studios also made luminous glass vases and bowls, pottery, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and works in bronze and enamel. Exhibited in Tiffany’s showrooms on Madison Avenue was a pair of mosaic columns inlaid with glass tesserae—this style of mosaic was a concept from Roman and Byzantine eras. The columns, in their subtle shading from midnight blue to pale peacock, reveal Tiffany’s mastery of the medium. The Museum’s Abalone Mosaic Earrings are adapted from the brilliant, iridescent peacock blue tesserae encircling the upper portion of the columns.
