Bronze footbath with stand, late 5th–early 4th century B.C.
Greek
Bronze; H. 8 7/16 in. (21.5 cm)
Purchase, Joseph Pulitzer Bequest, 1938 (38.11.5a,b)

This elegant footbath has a low, broad bowl with a delicate overhanging lip decorated with small beads and a pattern of narrow tongues around the outer edge. Its two long, slender handles curve up at the center and have a vertical ring of large beads at the highest point. At both ends, the handle is secured to the bowl by soldering a pair of pendant palmettes with coiled volutes above long, slim leaves with rounded tips. Long, curved projections extend from the outer sides of the palmettes, ending in bell-shaped florals on the rim of the bowl that frame the handles.
