The North Country, 1923
Willard Metcalf (American, 1858–1925)
Oil on canvas; 40 x 45 1/4 in. (101.6 x 114.9 cm)
George A. Hearn Fund, 1924 (24.60)

According to a friend of the artist, this painting depicts the hilly scenery of Perkinsville, not far from Springfield, Vermont. In the foreground is the Black River, and seen in the distance is Mount Ascutney or Hawks Mountain. Painted in 1923, this is one of a series of large-scale panoramic views that the artist had begun the previous year. All of the works in this series have similar compositions. This was perhaps the best known of Metcalf's late works.
