First entitled "The White Dress" when exhibited in 1899 at the second annual exhibition of "The Ten American Painters," this picture quickly became known as Across the Room. Tarbell was strongly influenced by the interior scenes of Edgar Degas and oriental art, and used such striking arrangements of space and light frequently. The Federal sofa appears in a number of his paintings and is recorded in a photograph of the artist's studio. The Chinese porcelain jar and Japanese screen are also seen in a number of his other pictures.
