Moretto da Brescia (Alessandro Bonvicino) (Italian, Brescian, ca. 1498–1554)
Oil on canvas; 18 x 21 3/4 in. (45.7 x 55.2 cm)
Rogers Fund, 1911 (11.53)

Following his baptism by John the Baptist, Christ retired to the wilderness for forty days: "And he was there … forty days, tested by Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him" (Mark 1:13). This picture, an early work by Moretto, is a fragment of a larger canvas that contained other narrative scenes of the life of Christ.
