Made for the Boullard de Gautellier family for their château (Loire), The Collation is one of a set of eight tapestries called the Fêtes Italiennes (Italian Village Scenes). Despite the title, the subjects are primarily devoted to showing attractive young people engaged in pleasant outdoor activities, such as this light alfresco meal. The subject matter and decorative palette typify the designs that Boucher produced for the Beauvais workshops during the 1730s and 1740s.
