Mary Cassatt (American, 1844–1926)
Oil on canvas; 36 1/2 x 29 in. (92.7 x 73.7 cm)
George A. Hearn Fund, 1909 (09.27)

Completed at the latest in 1899, when it was bought by the Parisian dealer Durand-Ruel, this work is one of the artist's most ambitious compositions. The identity of the sitters is not known, although the child's name was "Jules" and he appears in other works around this same time (see 29.100.47). The furniture and tea service belonged to the artist and also appear in other works executed during this time.
