The Agony in the Garden, predella panel
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio or Santi) (Italian, Marchigian, 1483–1520)
Oil on wood; 9 1/2 x 11 3/8 in. (24.1 x 28.9 cm)
Funds from various donors, 1932 (32.130.1)

This scene was part of the predella for the altarpiece by Raphael displayed nearby. It was removed in 1663 together with a scene of Christ carrying the cross (National Gallery, London), a Lamentation (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston), and two small figures of Franciscan saints (Dulwich Picture Gallery, London). The angel carrying the chalice was an afterthought. Originally, the chalice was shown on the rock, as a preparatory drawing for this picture in the Pierpont Morgan Library shows it.
