As the title suggests, Storm Clouds is a landscape scene, but it has been dramatically abstracted into a series of arched and rolling bands of color, surrounding a large "eye"-like shape in the center of the proverbial "storm." His colors are the muted shades of earth and overcast sky, and the frame (which Dove himself made and painted) echoes and enhances the grays of the composition in its silvery, metallic sheen. This painting illustrates Dove's characteristic affinity for nature and his ability to create pictorial equivalents for the universal rhythms and the life force that he felt existed therein.
