By the late nineteenth century, the innovative fashion for "tailor-made" women's suits had emerged. Made by tailors rather than dressmakers, these garments followed the conventions of traditional menswear and acknowledged the increasingly active and mobile life that women led. The unconventional pattern pieces and accommodating fit of this suit, however, suggest that it was the product of a dressmaker's shop despite the "tailored" effect of its detailing.
