The sitter in this portrait was an Italian actress married to Enrico Gomez d'Arza, the impresario of a small theater in the Italian quarter of Philadelphia. Eakins and his wife Susan visited this theater and became friends with the d'Arza family. This portrait was painted during the winter of 1901, according to a letter written by Susan Eakins in 1927 in which she described the sittings for it.
