Oil on wood
24 x 18 1/8 in. (61 x 46 cm)
Gift of Lewis C. Ledyard III, Mrs. Victor Onet, and Mrs. T. F. Turner, in memory of Lewis C. Ledyard, 1982 (1982.448)
Francia was a leading painter in Bologna whose softly modeled works were much admired by contemporaries. This picture shows the Madonna standing behind a window, the inner edges of which are represented illusionistically, and dates from about 14951500. It is in an exceptionally fine state of preservation. Another version is in a private collection in Bologna. The Venetian frame is not original to the picture but is of the period and is in beautiful condition.
