Bequest of Benjamin Altman, 1913 (14.40.628)

This panel may have been part of the predella to a late altarpiece by Fra Angelico, possibly one described by early sources as embellishing the high altar of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, the convent where Fra Angelico spent the last two years of his life and where he is buried. All four of the known panels are considerably damaged yet retain the full majesty of the artist's narrative imagination and his descriptive powers as a painter.
