Frank Lloyd Wright produced this chair as an integral part of the architectural scheme of the Ward Willits House, a classic example of his work from the early twentieth century. Commissioned by Ward Winfield Willits (1859–1949) in 1900 for the lot at 319 West Ontario, Highland Park, Illinois, the house was Wright's first masterpiece in the Prairie School style. The chair was designed as part of the dining room set. The arrangement of the chairs around an equally imposing table created a setting that Wright deemed appropriate for formal dining in the late Victorian era.
