Seventeenth-century American spoons with hammered oval bowls and separately cast handles are a form unique to New York. The handle design on this spoon, incorporating both naturalistic and grotesque ornament, is based on Dutch prototypes. It may have been used in the consumption of brandy-soaked raisins, which were traditionally served in two-handled bowls such as the example by Cornelius Kierstede (38.63) in the Museum's collection.
