Dish with Pomona, ca. 1600
Manner of Bernard Palissy (French, 1510–1589)
Lead-glazed earthenware; W. 13 3/8 in. (34 cm)
Gift of Julia A. Berwind, 1953 (53.225.60)

This earthenware platter, influenced by the work of ceramist Bernard Palissy, illustrates the rustic and formal aspects of a French garden. Pomona, goddess of gardens and orchards, presides over the scene, the tools of the gardener at her feet, while in the background is the fruit of her labor—a formally landscaped group of parterres centered on a water feature. In the middle ground, a peasant works the soil and two women carry bounty from the garden on their heads.
