Jumpsuit, fall–winter 2002
Giorgio Armani (Italian, born 1934)
Gray silk satin; (a) L. at center back 35 in. (88.9 cm), (b) L. 138 in. (350.5 cm)
Gift of Giorgio Armani, 2003 (2003.68a,b)

Armani created a form of tailoring reliant on the structure and draping characteristics of the cloth rather than on interfacings and padding of traditional tailored garments. In the instance of draped evening wear, however, Armani could not be more distinct in his interests and approaches. This one-shouldered "gown" is actually a jumpsuit, ending in tightly fitted Asian dhoti-style ankle cuffs that gather the fabric into a soft harem hem. The half-bow at the shoulder is a separate scarf that can be arranged to the taste of the wearer.
