Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide), 1870
Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910)
Oil on canvas; 26 x 38 in. (66 x 96.5 cm)
Gift of Mrs. William F. Minton, 1923 (23.77.2)

This picture, based on a study of the beach at Eagle Head, was first exhibited in 1870 at the National Academy of Design in New York as High Tide. It was engraved and published on August 6, 1870, in the short-lived Boston periodical Every Saturday. A view of the same beach by Homer entitled Low Tide (location unknown) was published in engraving format in the same issue of this periodical. It apparently was intended as a companion piece.
