Corot painted this study at Bas-Bréau, a section of the Forest of Fontainebleau famous for its immense oaks, in the summer of 1832 or 1833, when he was living in the nearby village of Chailly. He later used this sketch for the large oak in the background of Hagar in the Wilderness (38.64).
