One of Daubigny's many views of the river Oise, this study was undoubtedly painted aboard the Botin, the small boat that he used for painting expeditions. The year it was painted, a disapproving critic wrote: "The slave of his impressions, Daubigny is afraid to put too much into his paintings. He stops his hand before he can tighten the execution from closer up."
