Each of these pauldrons (shoulder defenses) is stamped with the mark of the celebrated armorer Lorenz Helmschmid of Augsburg. They were made by Helmschmid for a highly specialized type of tournament armor known as a Stechzeug, which was worn for the Gestech, a form of jousting fought with blunted lances.
