Joseph Griffiths, ca. 1794
Edward Savage (American, 1761–1817)
Watercolor on ivory; 2 7/16 x 1 15/16 in. (6.2 x 4.9 cm)
Purchase, Bequest of Antoinette D. T. Throckmorton, by exchange, 1985 (1985.141.8)

Best known for his oil portraits of Washington, Savage grew up in Princeton, Massachusetts, and began his career as a goldsmith. He painted miniatures early in his painting career, between about 1785 and 1794; they are uniformly naive in character, with little of the nuance found in works by experts. He painted this portrait in Boston, and the sitter is identified on the back of the rose gold locket: Joseph Griffiths / 4th June / 1794.
