This 1739 sampler prominently features the figures of Adam and Eve, modestly clothed in applied crocheted fig leaves. Adam and Eve samplers were particularly popular in the Boston area during the first half of the eighteenth century. Most of these samplers retain the long narrow proportions commonly found in earlier English examples. Certain decorative motifs, such as the rows of hexagonal and triangular embroidery, are found only on samplers made around Boston in this period.
