A Vase with Flowers, ca. 1618
Jacob Vosmaer (Dutch, 1584–1641)
Oil on wood; 33 1/2 x 24 5/8 in. (85.1 x 62.5 cm)
Purchase, 1871 (71.5)

The Delft painter Jacob Vosmaer is known only for a few flower still lifes that date from an early if not pioneering moment in the Netherlandish tradition. A very similar picture by Vosmaer in a Dutch private collection is dated 1618, which is a likely date for the present painting. At some time before the 1870s, the panel was cut down about three inches on either side and about nine inches at the top.
