A Bouquet of Flowers in a Crystal Vase, 1662
Nicolaes van Veerendael (Flemish, 1640–1691)
Oil on canvas; 19 1/2 x 15 7/8 in. (49.5 x 40.3 cm)
Bequest of Stephen Whitney Phoenix, 1881 (81.1.652)

Van Veerendael was influenced by two of the leading flower painters in Antwerp, Jan Davidsz. de Heem and Daniel Seghers. In this early work, the remarkable evidence of acute observation seems a legacy of de Heem's Dutch origins, but the overall design and the dwelling upon botanical details continue the Flemish tradition of Segher's master, Jan Brueghel the Elder.
