Locomotive, 1929
Roger M. Parry (French, 1905–1977)
Gelatin silver print; 8 7/16 x 6 7/16 in. (21.5 x 16.3 cm)
Ford Motor Company Collection, Gift of Ford Motor Company and John C. Waddell, 1987 (1987.1100.81)

Parry produced the hallucinatory inversion of tones in this photograph by making a copy negative of his original negative (creating a positive), and then making a negative print from it. The extra step in the normal negative-positive procedure created a ghost train hurtling through a plausible night, its black headlight the absence of warning.
