Funerary slab with a man controlling a rearing horse, Hellenistic, second half of 3rd century B.C.
Greek; from the Soldiers' Tomb, Ibrahimieh necropolis, Alexandria, excavated 1884
Painted inscription: "Pelopides, a Thessalian"
Limestone, paint; H. 15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm)
Gift of Darius Ogden Mills, 1904 (04.17.3)

A man wearing a belted yellow tunic struggles to bridle an unruly horse with its forelegs and head raised while an attendant in a yellow tunic stands at right. Greek funerary art of this period generally uses simple, balanced compositions to aid immediate legibility. This dynamic, partially foreshortened scene is seemingly unique.
