Ptolemy III Euergetes brought the Ptolemaic empire to its greatest extent, regaining Libya by marriage to Berenice II, daughter of his father's half-brother, and conquering Syria and the Greek cities of Anatolia, after the death of his sister, widow of the Seleucid king Antiochus II.

This small bronze head of either Ptolemy II or III shows the king represented in the traditional Egyptian fashion wearing the remains of the red crown of Upper Egypt with a uraeus.
