Alto Recorder, mid-18th century
Thomas Stanesby, Jr. (English, 1692–1754)
London, England
Boxwood; L. 19 1/2 in. (49.6 cm)
Gift of Dr. and Mrs. Roger G. Gerry, 1982 (1982.390)

Stanesby and his father, along with Peter Bressan, were the finest makers of recorders and flutes in England at this period. This alto recorder in F' is stamped "STANESBY/IUNIOR/F," and has a flutelike foot joint, perhaps in response to the growing popularity of the transverse flute by the 1720s.
