This imposing Gothic Revival table has a history of ownership in the Finger Lakes region of New York since the mid-nineteenth century. The wooden top is inset with a circular piece of stone, into which multicolored and patterned marble has been laid. The decorative marble top was likely imported from Italy. Although the table's maker is unknown, it was probably made in New York City after a design by the British architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, who had published his designs in a book called Gothic Furniture (London, 1835). This book and this particular design, of a pedestal table with a top supported by flying buttresses, were well known in America.
