Like Roger Fenton, whom he knew through the Photographic Society, for which he was treasurer, White practiced photography with uncommon skill. A lawyer by trade, as was Fenton, White won the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 in Paris and at the Universal Exhibition of Photography in Brussels the following year. He possessed a technical ability that enabled him to perceive and render the coloristic tapestry of a scene as monochromatic shifts of the subtlest distinction. Few extant prints illustrate White's talent as well as this one, a talent for which he was justly celebrated during his day.
