Jean-François Millet (French, 1814–1875)
Oil on canvas; 15 5/8 x 13 1/2 in. (39.7 x 34.3 cm)
Gift of Stephen C. Clark, 1938 (38.75)

Millet first treated this subject in a woodcut, one of a series of ten "Labors of the Fields" published in a popular periodical in 1853. This painting, probably done in 1856–57, was included in a show held in 1860 by the dealer Martinet, in whose gallery avant-garde artists such as Courbet and Manet also exhibited.
