Millet first treated this subject in a woodcut, one of a series of ten "Labors of the Fields" published in a popular periodical in 1853. This painting, probably done in 185657, was included in a show held in 1860 by the dealer Martinet, in whose gallery avant-garde artists such as Courbet and Manet also exhibited.
