Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917)
Plate III of Les cathédrales de France, published in an edition of 50 (Paris, 1914)
Thomas J. Watson Library (126.6/R61)

Les cathédrales de France, the book in which this plate was published, contains Rodin's musings on French medieval cathedrals accompanied by a hundred illustrations, largely of his sketches of details of French Gothic and Renaissance architecture. He also included a few illustrations identified as sketches made from works by Michelangelo. This illustration reveals Rodin's special interest in the play of light and shadow on the sculpture of the cathedral's portal.
