This composition repeats, with variations in the tea service and the view through the window, a portion of Tissot's The Parting (National Museum of Wales, Cardiff), also dated 1872. A drawing of the figure (private collection) is inscribed to his friend Edgar Degas. The same model, similarly dressed and shown in the same interior (possibly a room in the Falcon Tavern, Gravesend) appears in An Interesting Story (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), another narrative costume piece that Tissot painted soon after his arrival in London.
