    Ancient pieces of jewelry in their original settings are rare. This particularly fine work consists of a red jasper intaglio mounted in an oval gold box, to which are attached settings for pearls and glass inlays. The intaglio, depicting a hunter on horseback thrusting his spear at a boar, is of superlative quality. The two hooks on the reverse of the mount suggest that the object served as a clasp, possibly for a necklace or a diadem.
