Joseph Anthony, Jr. (1762–1814), Gilbert Stuart's first cousin, was born in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of a successful sea captain. He trained as a silversmith, opened a business in Philadelphia, and eventually made the transition from craftsman to entrepreneur. His work is represented in the Museum's collection. He became prominent in local society and was one of the original subscribers to the Philadelphia City Dancing Assembly Fund. In 1785, he married Henrietta Hillegas (05.40.2).
