  • Door, second half of 15th century; Timurid
    Iran or Central Asia
    Wood with traces of pigment

    H. 80 7/8 in. (205.4 cm), W. 30 in. (76.2 cm)
    Rogers Fund, 1923 (23.67.7)

Although this door is said to have been found many years ago in a secular building in Khokand, in present-day Uzbekistan, its original place of manufacture is unknown. The main panel of decoration features a symmetrical arrangement of vines and vegetal elements. Prominent among these are large blossoms and leaves with tightly coiled and beveled interior features. This distinctive style was favored in stone carving in Timurid Herat. The close similarity between materials carved in separate workshops suggests the inspiration of a common source—the royal book atelier.
