In this lively sacra conversazionereminiscent of the serene yet sumptuous examples by his contemporary Palma il Vecchiothe young Christ, balancing on his mother's hand, holds a globe and blesses Saint John the Baptist. Surrounding him are John's parents, Elizabeth and Zaccarias, and Saints Joseph and Catherine of Alexandria. Bonifazio was renowned for such compositions of the Madonna and Child with saints. The satisfying amplitude of these figures and the wonderful color harmonies of greens, reds, and blues, so like early Titian, make this painting a particularly attractive example of the genre.
