Francesco Salviati (Francesco de' Rossi) (Italian, Florentine, 1510–1563)
Oil on canvas
37 3/4 x 29 1/2 in. (95.9 x 74.9 cm)
Bequest of Helen Hay Whitney, 1944 (45.128.11)
This painting is an example of Salviati's mature work. Its composition, along with the subject's stylized hands and their pose, shows the influence of the schools of Parma and Florence. The costume of the sitter suggests a date in the early 1540s.
