  • Portrait of a Man
Francesco Salviati (Francesco de' Rossi) (Italian, Florentine, 1510–1563)
    Oil on canvas

    48 1/4 x 36 3/4 in. (122.6 x 93.4 cm)
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Nate B. Spingold, 1955 (55.14)

This portrait is in Salviati's style of about 1540. Costumes and beards like those of the sitter were fashionable about that time in Mantua and Salviati may have painted it when he was there in 1541. It was probably he who originated the curtain and border ornament that are repeated in a portrait of Cosimo I de' Medici from Bronzino's workshop (08.262).
