  • Leaf from a Qur'an, ca. 1250–1350
    North Africa
Ink, colors, and gold on vellum

    10 1/4 x 8 9/16 in. (26 x 21.7 cm)
    Rogers Fund, 1937 (37.21)

The manuscript from which this leaf comes must have been one of the finest North African Qur’ans of the period, especially for its uncommon use of gold. The preservation of a number of archaic calligraphic features derived from kufic and the use of vellum are typical of manuscripts produced in the Maghrib (hence the definition of maghribi for this script) and in Andalusia in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
