This picture was probably part of an elaborate multipanel retablo, or altarpiece, commissioned in 1505 for the chapel of the University of Salamanca. The retablo combined sculpture with painting, and Juan has emphasized the sculptural presence of his figures by placing them in gold niches. The panel is exemplary of the artist's ability to adapt Northern style to the tastes of his Spanish clients.
