The Judgment of Paris, possibly ca. 1528
Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, 1472–1553)
Oil on wood; 40 1/8 x 28 in. (101.9 x 71.1 cm)
Rogers Fund, 1928 (28.221)

The painting shows Paris awarding a golden apple (here transformed into a glass orb) to the fairest of three goddesses. This was a favorite subject of the mature Cranach. A closely similar picture in the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung in Basel is dated 1528, and the present painting may date from about this time.
